The SON

A wealthy man and his son loved to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso to Raphael. They would often sit together and admire the great works of art.
When the Vietnam conflict broke out, the son went to war. He was very courageous and died in battle while rescuing another soldier. The father was notified and grieved deeply for his only son.

About a month later, just before Christmas, there was a knock at the door. A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands.

He said, 'Sir, you don't know me, but I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life. He saved many lives that day, and he was carrying me to safety when a bullet struck him in the heart and he died instantly. He often talked about you, and your love for art.' The young man held out this package. 'I know this isn't much. I'm not really a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this.'

The father opened the package. It was a portrait of his son, painted by the young man. He stared in awe at the way the soldier had captured the personality of his son in the painting. The father was so drawn to the eyes that his own eyes welled up with tears. He thanked the young man and offered to pay him for the picture. 'Oh, no sir, I could never repay what your son did for me. It's a gift.'

The father hung the portrait over his mantle. Every time visitors came to his home he took them to see the portrait of his son before he showed them any of the other great works he had collected.

The man died a few months later. There was to be a great auction of his paintings. Many influential people gathered, excited over seeing the great paintings and having an opportunity to purchase one for their collection.

On the platform sat the painting of the son. The auctioneer pounded his gavel. 'We will start the bidding with this picture of the son.. Who will bid for this picture?'

There was silence.

Then a voice in the back of the room shouted, 'We want to see the famous paintings. Skip this one.'

But the auctioneer persisted. 'Will somebody bid for this painting? Who will start the bidding? $100, $200?'

Another voice angrily. 'We didn't come to see this painting. We came to see the Van Gogh's, the Rembrandts. Get on with the real bids!'

But still the auctioneer continued. 'The son! The son! Who'll take the son?'

Finally, a voice came from the very back of the room. It was the longtime gardener of the man and his son. 'I'll give $10 for the painting.' Being a poor man, it was all he could afford.

'We have $10, who will bid $20?'

'Give it to him for $10. Let's see the masters.'

The crowd was becoming angry. They didn't want the picture of the son..

They wanted the more worthy investments for their collections.

The auctioneer pounded the gavel. 'Going once, twice, SOLD for $10!'

A man sitting on the second row shouted, 'Now let's get on with the collection!'

The auctioneer laid down his gavel. 'I'm sorry, the auction is over.'

'What about the paintings?'

'I am sorry. When I was called to conduct this auction, I was told of a secret stipulation in the will. I was not allowed to reveal that stipulation until this time. Only the painting of the son would be auctioned.. Whoever bought that painting would inherit the entire estate, including the paintings.

The man who took the son gets everything!'

God gave His son 2,000 years ago to die on the cross.. Much like the auctioneer, His message today is: 'The son, the son, who'll take the son?'

Because, you see, whoever takes the Son gets everything.

FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, WHO SO EVER BELIEVETH, SHALL HAVE ETERNAL LIFE...THAT'S LOVE

The Loom of Time

Man's life is laid in the loom of time

To a pattern he does not see,

While the weavers work and the shuttles fly

Till the dawn of eternity.

Some shuttles are filled with silver threads

And some with threads of gold,

While often but the darker hues

Are all that they may hold.

But the weaver watches with skillful eye

Each shuttle fly to and fro,

And sees the pattern so deftly wrought

As the loom moves sure and slow.

God surely planned the pattern:

Each thread, the dark and fair,

Is chosen by His master skill

And placed in the web with care.

He only knows its beauty,

And guides the shuttles which hold

The threads so unattractive,

As well as the threads of gold.

Not till each loom is silent,

And the shuttles cease to fly,

Shall God reveal the pattern

And explain the reason why

The dark threads were as needful

In the weaver's skillful hand

As the threads of gold and silver

For the pattern which He planned

Spiritual Restoration – Reading Ps 51

How many people in the Bible fell into a backslidden state?

David, Jonah, Abraham, Prodigal Son, Peter...................................

How can or may the Christian in a spiritual decline be restored?

The Christian in spiritual decline may be restored when he comes to himself, realises the seriousness of his position and fulfils carefully the conditions in scripture.

1. The restoration of the Christian whose life is in spiritual decline is taught in scripture.

The backslider’s state is not hopeless. Ps 37:24

Nothing can be done for the backslider until they are pricked in their heart. Mark 14:72; John 21:15-17

You are exhorted to return to the Lord. 2 Chron 30:6; Isa 3:12, 14, 22; Hos 14:1-4

The Lord uses Chastisement to bring the backslider back to Himself. Hosea 2:6, 5:15, 6:1

A Christian may also be used in their restoration. Gal 6:1; this can be done through direct questions Gal 4:15 or by direct accusation 2 Sam 12:1-13

Restoration can only take place when they come to themselves. Luke 15:17; Jonah 2:2-4

2. The Lord promises to pardon the backslider and revive the Christian in Spiritual decline.

There are conditions. 2 Chron 7:14

The RECONITION that deliverance belongs to the Lord. Jon 2:9

The REMEMBERANCE that God is a jealous God. Ex 34:14

All arrogance, self-assurance and pride must put to the side but there must be submission and humbling before God. James 4:6

Hosea 5:5-7 5And the pride of Israel doth testify to his face: therefore shall Israel and Ephraim fall in their iniquity; Judah also shall fall with them. 6They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the LORD; but they shall not find him; he hath withdrawn himself from them. 7They have dealt treacherously against the LORD: for they have begotten strange children: now shall a month devour them with their portions.

There must be RESISTANCE to the devil. James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:8-9; Eph 6:16

Draw near to God. James 4:8

The sin of backsliding is to be confessed as we depend on the atoning work of Christ. 1 John 1 :7-9

We must turn away from the things that have led us astray. Isa 1:16-20

3. What will be the results of the restoration of a Christian

THINK!

The joy of God’s salvation. Ps 51:12

The desire for witnessing. Ps 51:13

There will be praise. Ps 51:15

There will be humility Ps 51:17

There will be acceptance of God’s will. Ps 51:8

Spiritual Decline – Hosea 4

What is spiritual decline?

Spiritual decline or backsliding is turning back from following the Lord. It takes a variety of forms, but it always begins with the thoughts, and eventually it shows itself in a life which is no longer wholehearted in its devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ.

1. Spiritual decline describes what the Bible calls backsliding.

Turning back from the Lord by degrees – Zeph 1:6

It is turning of the heart away from God – 1 Kings 11:9 so that the heart is not wholly true to God. See verse 4

It is a gradual forgetting of God. Hos 2:13

Serving of 2 masters Matt 6:24

It is an abandonment of our first love. Rev 3:16

It is pushing God to the outside of our life Rev 3:20

It is spiritual adultery. Hos 1:2, James 4:3-4

2. Backsliding will always show itself in different forms

It all begins with our thoughts. 2 Cor 11:3

Our prayer life will be affected James 4:2. We are commanded to pray Luke 18:1

Our attendance at the place of worship will be affected. Heb 10:25, Ps 84:10

There can be a complete complacency about their situation. Amos 6:1, 4-7; 1 Peter 1:9; Rev 3:17

He needs someone to teach him again. He doesn’t have the skill nor the ability to discern. Heb 5:12-14; 1 Cor 3:1-3

You will fail to seek His guidance. Pro 3:5-6

3. The causes of spiritual decline

The neglect or the misuse of prayer. Jam 4:2-3

Giving in to sin, with the sin unrented of and unconfessed. Ps 51:3-4

Disobedience to the obvious and know will of God. Jon 1:2-3; Jer 8:5-7; 1 Cor 10:23

Love of the world. Rom 12:2; 2 Tim 4:10; 1 John 2:15-17

Relationships 1 Kings 11:4; 2 Cor 6:14

Self assurance Pro 16:18; 1 Cor 10:12

The pursuit of false and unworthy ambitions. Jam 4:3

A lack of self examination. 1 Cor 11:31

4. The consequence of backsliding

It will grieve the Holy Spirit. Eph 4:30

We will become good for nothing in fulfilling God’s purposes. Mat 5:13

It removes the joy of God’s salvation. Ps 51:12

The ability to teach others is lost Ps 51:13

It makes the Christian concerned nauseating to Christ. Rev 3:16

It brings the believer under the displeasure of God. Ps 78: 57-59

It brings the believer under God’s reproof and chastisement. Rev 3:19

Social Responsibility

What is it? Who is responsible? What part do we, government or business play?

Mark 12:31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

God

God set the pattern out in Gen 1:27-30

After the fall in Gen 3:21

Social responsibility was to be imbedded in society. Ex 22:25, Lev 19:10, 23:22, Deut 15:11, 24:12-13, 14-15

Matt 5:45

God’s wrath is declared in Ezek 22:23-31

Life is not to be all work!

What do we learn from Luke 12:16-21?

What do we learn from 1 Tim 6:6-10?

There is a cycle of work and a cycle of rest. Ex 20:8-11. What are we to do on the Sabbath? What about nurses and doctors? When do they rest?

Idleness is condemned – 2 The 3:11

No one who is able to support themselves are entitled to be supported 2 The 3:10

Employers need to careful James 5:4

What does Col 3:22-25 teach us?

How is the world’s view of work different from the Christian’s? Rom 12:2

Use your talents. Mat 25:14-30

Work is to be an act of worship – Eph 6:5-6, 1 Cor 10:31

Work – Part 1

What does the Bible teach about work?

Work was an original purpose of God for man, but man’s rebellion against God marred man’s experience of God’s purpose so that man finds his work all too often a burden rather than a pleasure.

Work is part of God’s scheme for the support of the human race, and properly fulfilled it brings its own rewards. While to avoid work is folly, life is not to be filled exclusively with work – God makes provision for rest and recreation. Christians should bear witness to their faith by the quality of their work.

1. There is many different types of work. Gen 4:2, Ex 31:2-5

2. Work was the original purpose of God for man

Man was to subdue the earth. Gen 1:28, Ps 8:3-8

Man working before the fall. Gen 2:15 (Joy)

The principle of work is written into the whole of God’s creation. Pro 6:6-11

It is always assumed that work constitutes part of God’s pattern for man. Ex 20:9-10

God intends that man should find enjoyment in his work. Eccl 5:18-19

More pleasure in the work than in the result or achievements of the work. Eccl 2:10-11

Who thinks that working manually is beneath them? Eph 4:28, Mark 6:3

Work is a sign of God’s blessing. Unemployment in a nation may be a sign of God’s judgement. Zech :8-10-12

3. Man’s rebellion against God marred man’s experience of God’s purposes in the principle of work.

The curse which followed the fall of man was not the curse of work, but the pain and hardship connected with work by reason of the curse upon the ground. Gen 3:17-19

Work without God is meaningless and pointless. Ps 127:2

Work has been used to exploit and oppress. Ex 1:11-14, James 5:4-6

4. The purpose which may be discerned behind the principle of work.

The great incentive for daily work is our daily bread as the fruit of it. Pro 16:26

Daily work is the means of building the home and sustaining it. Proverbs 24:27

Daily work is part of God’s scheme for support of the human race. Pro 27:25-27

We are to make a return to our parents. It is a dreadful thing not to provide for members of our families. 1 Tim 5:4, 8

Christ taught that we were to give to those who were not as well off. Matt 19:21, Luke 14:13, Acts 2:44, 45, 4:32

The apostle Paul set an example of working, not only for his own support, but also for the benefit of those who were serving the lord with him Acts 20:34; he also laid emphasis upon the provision of help for the poor. Rom 15:26-27 2 Cor chapters 8 & 9

We should work with the aim to help others and not just ourselves. Eph 4:28

Worldliness Part 2

Worldliness revolves around the pride of life. The empty pride we have in possessions and position. 1 John 2:16

It is a lust for what in Mat 20:21?

It is a lust for what in Acts 12:21-24
What does this man do wrong in Luke 18:11-12? See also James 4:16

What was wrong with his choice? Gen 13:11

Was the rich man wrong in Luke 12:13-21?

What is Matt 6:31 teaching you?
Who or what do you love? 1 John 2:15

What needs to be right in our lives? 1 Sam16:7
What does it mean to commit adultery against God? James 4:4

What is the cure? James 4:7-10
What can we learn from Ps 1:1?
What antidote should we use to combat worldliness? Romans 12:1-2, 1 Thes 4:3, 1 Cor 10:31

What are we taught in 1 Cor 10:12, 11:28 & 2 Cor 13:5

Finish reading John 17:17

Worldliness Part 1

What is worldliness and why is it so serious?

Worldliness is essentially love of the world as it manifests itself in the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. It is so serious because it is in complete opposition to the love of God.

Worldliness needs to be seen against the background of the Christian’s position in the world.

How did God describe the world? Gen 1:31

What is the world like now? Rom 5:12

Under whose power does the world lie? John 12:31, Eph 2:2

How are Christians described in Gal 1:4?

How are we to respond to 1 Cor 5:10-11? Look also at Phil 2:15

What are we to resist? Rom 12:2

What does Gal 6:14 mean?

What does John 17:14-20 teach us?

What is the world and how are to respond to it? Mat 28:19-20, Mat 9:38, Phil 2:15-16

Defining Worldliness

Worldliness is the expression of what? Mark 7:21-23

What does 2 Tim 4:10 teach us?

What is worldliness? 1 John 2:16 What is the first thing?

What dominated our lives before salvation and what has changed and why? Eph 2:3, Titus 2:12, 1 Peter 4:2-4, 2 peter 1:4

What causes personal conflict and quarrels in our lives? James 4:1-4

How are we to safeguard ourselves from worldliness? Gal 5:16 (read also verses 17-25)

What was the first thing Christ was tempted to do in Luke 4:2-3?

What is worldliness? 1 John 2:16 What is the second thing?

Our eyes are organs of what? Jos 7:21 What commandment was broken here?

What does Luke 11:34 teach us?

What does Job 31:1and Mat 5:28 teach us?

What can covetousness lead us to? 2 Kings 5:19-27, 2 Sam 11:2-5, 15, 27, 12:19

The lust of the eye is what the devil uses in Luke 4:5

The Shepherd: John 10:1-30

One of the best known hymns or Psalms is Ps23. It has been a psalm of comfort to many as they have went through difficult times in their life. It is a portion of scripture that has been learned by many as they have sat in Sunday School. It is also a very popular Psalm for a funeral service.
It tells the story of the yearly cycle of the life of the sheep. The preeminent one in this Psalm is “The Shepherd”. David the shepherd boy relates God’s relationship and dealings with him.
I am sure David could have cried out as it says in Isaiah 53:6 - All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way
I have been drawn to preach on this portion today due to the recent passing of my grandmother in England. Her pastor mentioned that this was a portion that she had learned as a child.
We are a people who will continually go through difficult times. Sometimes we ask how that person can cope. The answer is that they know and love the shepherd.
PS 23:4 “For thou art with me”

1. The Person
This was not some mere man. He is the Son of God, the creator of this universe, the 1st and the last
Ps 23:1 The LORD i.e. the Lord Jehovah, the self existent one or the eternal one
What is God? God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.
In v2 He is called the Shepherd but in verse 11 He is called the Good shepherd
I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

This person loves us. John 15:13 - Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
He knows his sheep v3. Luke 12:7 - But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
He knows you intimately. Expand.......
I am sure we have all meet famous people of some sort. They could be TV presenters, sports people, politicians, business people etc
But would they remember your name?
The PERSON the Lord Jesus Christ knows my name. He even knew before I knew him.
It is Christ that has named us. We have been adopted into His family.
I don’t have to explain myself when I come to talk to Him.

2. The Position

I want you to notice the Position of the Shepherd. He is in front!!
Verse 3 says “leadeth them out”
He is to lead and we are to follow. Christ called to his disciples – FOLLOW ME
The Jesus Way – If we lived like this our lives would be so different.
It would affect the people we associate with, the places we would go and the things that we would participate in.
Work, school, home – WWJD – What Would Jesus Do
When did you last ask yourself, am I in the will of God?
We should never forget the correct order. But we have a tendency to rebel, to run off on our own wee notions.
The shepherd is there to lead us and guide us.
Ps 23:3 says “he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness”
It is good to be on the path of the right both legally and morally
If ever we needed someone to lead and guide us in this current world it is now
Are you behind Him but can you see or hear Him?
The path is paved with the stones of the 10 commandments.
Do we know them? One documentary I watched interviewed young people who could hardly mention 2 or 3.
How many can you repeat?
Ps 119:35 - Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.
The world laughs at us for our Faith and in many countries people are persecuted and sacrifice their lives.
Even with all of this, when we have the Shepherd in front we are on the pathway of Wisdom
People are crying out for wisdom – eastern Religion, Self Help books etc
Proverbs 4:11 – “I have taught thee in the way of wisdom”
We are not to destroy the correct order of things. Christ’s position is to be in front and we are to follow.
Don’t kick it, obey it

3. The Protection
The protection of the Shepherd can be seen in verse 7
I am the door. The shepherd would have lain across the door way to have protected the sheep during the night.
Psalm 23:4-5 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
1 Sam 17:40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.

Christ did not just get us saved and the leave us to the Devil.
1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
Christ has provided us with protection. Read Eph 6:1-3

4. The Provision read John 10:9

We all have to live. We all need food.
Article on the internet:
Although not as critical as going without water, missing even just a few meals can cause a host of undesirable complications for the would-be survivor. Although we will not starve while going without food for several days or even a week, being underfed for even just one day can cause:
Irritability
Low moral
Lethargy
Physical Weakness
Confusion and disorientation
Poor judgment
Weakened immune system
Inability to maintain body temperature which can lead to hypothermia, heat exhaustion, or even heat stroke.
Only a well fed survivor with a full stomach can take on the challenges adversity will throw in his way.
Drink Water
It has been shown that if you lose just 2.5% of your body weight from water loss, you will lose 25% of your efficiency. For a 175 pound man that is only about two quarts of water. As the survivor dehydrates, his blood becomes thicker and loses volume. This causes the heart to work harder and circulation of blood to be less efficient. In a survival situation, losing a full one quarter of your physical and mental abilities due to dehydration could mean the end of your life. Bottom line: drink plenty of fluids whether you feel thirsty or not so that you stay peak efficiency.
These symptoms can adversely affect your ability to survive as weakness, sickness, accidents, and mistakes take their toll.
We are to feed upon Christ.
John 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
God always makes provision for His people

Pastor – to tend a flock
1 Peter 5:2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
God will make provision but you have your duty to do.
What are you here for today? We should be here to Listen and Learn.

5. The Prophesy
John 10:16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.
This verse gives hope to the gentiles
We can see this being fulfilled in Acts 10
Read verse 12-16, 28, 34-36, 44-48
The parable of the prodigal son can also give us the same picture
The elder son – Jewish
The prodigal son is the gentile nation
Luke 15:20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
It is good to know that we have been chosen by God
John 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you
John 17:20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

6. The Promise

The promise is found in verse 28
The promise of eternal life
Jesus goes on to explain how this happens in verse 29/30 – This got the Jews mad (V31)
Many Christian live in fear of losing their salvation
They will say that they can leave the hand of God
Notice the word MAN – this verse could read without it
Q32: What benefits do they that are effectually called partake of in this life?
A: They that are effectually called do in this life partake of justification, adoption, and
sanctification, and the several benefits which in this life do either accompany or flow from them.

Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. Romans 8:30

Q33: What is Justification?
A: Justification is an act of Gods free grace, wherein he pardoneth all our sins, and accepteth us as righteous in his sight, only for the righteousness of Christ imputed to us, and received by faith alone.

We should not live in the fear of losing our salvation but in the victory of what Christ has done for us.

As we think on this great promise can I ask you? Are you in the hand of the shepherd?

Do you know the person of the Lord Jesus Christ?

Are you in the correct fold?

Luke 15:4-7
What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

Stop rebelling and running in the wilderness of sin and call out for the Shepherd today

Christian, take encouragement from this portion today

A House that Stands the Test of Time & Eternity

Luke 6:46-49 says, And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

Ruth Study 2 - Famine

Bethlehem –Judah

Bethlehem means – House of Bread

Later becomes the birthplace of Jesus Christ who is the Bread of Heaven

Judah means – Praise the Lord

Jesus Christ is a descendant of the tribe of Judah

We have food and worship here. There was to be nourishment for ourselves and worship to God.

But there was a famine

It is interesting that within Palestine there were no rivers to rely on for the watering of crops etc. They had to rely on rain. If God stopped the rain there would be famine causing shortage and suffering.

How are we spiritually?

The vigilance of God

Lev 26 – there is 2 pathways outlined – obedience or disobedience

V1 – refraining from idolatry

V2 – regarding the Sabbath

V2 – revering His sanctuary

V3 – respecting God’s law

These were the commands of God to His people. If they did these they would receive a 6 fold blessing. Note the words “I Will”.

V4 – A Plentiful Rainfall

V6 – A Peaceful Rest

V6 – A Powerful Victory

V9 – A prosperous Supply

V11 – A Place of Worship

V12 – A Pleasant Communication

But God was vigilant; He saw their disobedience and tried a chastening method to bring them to Himself

Ruth Study 3

2. The visitation of God

Deut 11:13-14

And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the LORD your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul, That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.

The first rain was to prepare the soil and the second rain was to mature the crops.

The drought that brought the famine was a clear indication that Israel had disobeyed the Lord. The heavens were shut.

When we have a spiritual drought in individuals lives or in church organisations, it is because men have departed from the Living God.

It is a clear indication that the hand of God’s chastisement is upon us.

We need a time where Heavens are opened.

Luke 3:21-22

Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

Acts 7:56

And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

3. The Voice of God

Call to repentance

He was trying to bring them from idols, rebellion and disobedience

Some people run from the hand chastisement

God wanted a time of soul searching

Many in our ranks have given up the fellowship of the brethren, the worship of God, and their usefulness in service and have gone into a backslidden state rathere than meet the issue of God’s call to repentance.

The Failure

And a certain man of Beth–lehem–judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons

There were 3 countries that people living in Canaan have journeyed.

·         Egypt

·         Babylon

·         Moab

Egypt – Israel’s bondage in Egypt – Picture of the sinner in the world

Read Joshua 5:7-9

In their murmurings they wanted to turn back to Egypt

Acts 7:39 - To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,

The wilderness was a type of regeneration

·         They were separated

·         Dwelling alone

·         Not welcome among the nations

·         Guide was the pillar of cloud – Holy Spirit

·         Fed by Heavenly manna

·         Drank the water from The Rock

Egypt was behind, Canaan was before them and God was with them

Israel in Canaan is typical of the believer in a fully consecrated, sanctified state.

Ready for the conflict

Joshua 1:3 - Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.

Fight of faith

Dressed in his armour – the breast plate of righteousness – nothing to protect the back

No longer manna but milk and honey, grapes and pomegranates.

He is a victor, a conqueror, and an over comer

Babylon – home of the backslider and the apostate

Psalm 137:4 - How shall we sing the LORD'S song in a strange land?

The picture of the backslider – no song, no joy, in a state of weeping and wanting

Rev 14:8 - And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.

Rev 18:21 - And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.

Rev18:4 - And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

Babylon started with the spirit of defiance and independence to ward God and took on the name Babel

Gen 11:1-9

Modesty Heart Check

This was an article I came across while reading a book called "Worldliness - Resisting the Seduction of a Fallen World". It is well worth reading and discussing. Leave your comments

By Carolyn Mahaney, Nicole Whitacre, Kristin Chesemore and Janelle Bradshaw

“…Women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness-with good works.” 1 Timothy 2:9-10

Start with a Heart Check…

"How does a woman discern the sometimes fine line between proper dress and dressing to be the center of attention? The answer starts in the intent of the heart. A woman should examine her motives and goals for the way she dresses. Is her intent to show the grace and beauty of womanhood? Is it to reveal a humble heart devoted to worshipping God? Or is it to call attention to herself and flaunt her beauty? Or worse, to attempt to lure men sexually? A woman who focuses on worshiping God will consider carefully how she is dressed, because her heart will dictate her wardrobe and appearance." John MacArthur [emphasis added]
What statement do my clothes make about my heart?
In choosing what clothes to wear today, whose attention do I desire and whose approval do I crave? Am I seeking to please God or impress others?
Is what I wear consistent with biblical values of modesty, self- control and respectable apparel, or does my dress reveal an inordinate identification and fascination with sinful cultural values?
Who am I trying to identify with through my dress? Is the Word of God my standard or is the latest fashion?
Have I asked other godly individuals to evaluate my wardrobe?
Does my clothing reveal an allegiance to the gospel or is there any contradiction between my profession of faith and my practice of godliness?
Before you leave the house, do a modesty check. (What are some things you’ll look for as you stand in front of your mirror?)
When I am wearing a loose-fitting blouse or scoop-neck, can I see anything when I lean over? If so, I need to remember to place my hand against my neckline when I bend down.
If I am wearing a button-down top, I need to turn sideways and move around to see if there are any gaping holes that expose my chest. If there are, I've got to grab the sewing box and pin between the buttons.
The same check is needed if I am wearing a sleeveless shirt. When I move aound, can I see my bra? If I do, I need the pins again.
Am I wearing a spaghetti-strap, halter, or sheer blouse? Not even pins will fix this problem! Most guys find these a hindrance in their struggle with lust. It's time to go back to the closet.
Can I see the lace or seam of my bra through my shirt? In this case, seamless bras are a better option.
More key questions: Does my shirt reveal any part of my cleavage? Does my midriff show when I raise my hands above my head? Is my shirt just plain too tight? If the answer to anyone of these questions is yes, then I need to change my outfit.

Moving on down...
Does my midriff (or underwear) show when I bend over or lift my hands? If so, is it because my skirt or my pants are too low? Either my shirt needs to be longer or I need to find a skirt or pants that sit higher.
I also have to turn around to see if what I'm wearing is too tight around my back side, or if the outline of my underwear shows. If so, I know what I have to do!
And as for shorts - I can't just check them standing up. I need to see how much they reveal when I sit down. If I see too much leg, I need a longer pair.
The "sit-down" check applies to my skirt or dress as well. And I must remember to keep my skirt pulled down and my knees together when I'm seated.
And speaking of skirts, watch out for those slits! Does it reveal too much when I walk? Pins are also helpful here.
Before I leave, I need to give my skirt a sunlight check. Is it see- through? If so, I need a slip.
Finally, I must remember to do this modesty check with my shoes on. High-heels make my dress or skirt appear shorter. And don't forget, this applies to formal wear as well.
A note on swimwear: It's not easy but you can still strive to be modest at the pool or beach. Look for one-piece bathing suits that aren't cut high on the leg and don't have low necklines.
