1 Timothy 4:12
Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
When we think of the youth of today what do we think of? So many times we have negative things to say. They are criticized for their dress, their behavior and their culture. We have all been led to believe that a person wearing a “hoodie” is a thug waiting to attack and rob us. We are all very guilty of stereo typing people by what they wear or by their age.
This week, young person, as we go into this week let us not be caught up in the things of the world. Let no one be able to point the finger at us and accuse us. Let us break the mould and be an example of the believers.
Timothy was a young man in the ministry. Paul was exhorting him in this first letter to be an example to the believers. The word example means to be a stamp, pattern or print. It could also mean to be a statute. Paul was saying live in such a way that others would look at you and say that this is how a Christian should be and live.
He was to be an example in:
· Word
· Conversation
· Charity
· Spirit
· Faith
· Purity
What does this all mean?
To be an example in WORD is to speak in such a way that is God glorifying. It is not telling lies, exaggerating, telling unclean jokes, and tearing people down with you words. As we speak let us tell the truth, speak with joy and help to build up those round about us.
To be an example in CONVERSATION is to be of Godly behavior. How do you act or react with others. Do you respond or behave in a way that others will take notice of you. Are your actions different between how you act in front of the Godly and ungodly? Paul was telling Timothy to raise the standard and be an example to all in his behavior.
To be an example in CHARITY is to live out our love in actions. The word charity is from the word agape, which means love. It is another word for affection or benevolence or it could also mean a love feast. It is love in action. Let us this week keep our eyes open and look for opportunities how we may show God’s love to others.
To be an example in SPIRIT is to have that warmth of spirit that people are drawn to. We all know people that we enjoy being around. People who even in the middle of all circumstances have strength of spirit that sees them through. People who always have a smile and are willing to help those who have need.
To be an example in FAITH is to live our life on the Rock Christ Jesus. It is to have a faith that is steady and consistent in this faithless generation. It is showing forth a living testimony of what Christ has done in our lives. Let us not live in fear but in faith this week holding unto Christ who is the author and finisher of our faith.
To be an example in PURITY is to live a life that is spotless from the world. If the world entangles us then we will get contaminated. Let us separate ourselves and live in the light of God’s word. The story was told of the man who thought he was clean but as he got closer to the light he noticed how dirty he really was. Get close to God this week and sanctify yourself.
Let others point the finger if they will. Let it not be for anything bad but because we are living for God with all of our hearts.
Stand out as an example for the believers this week.
